19/04/2011 – ALBANIA DIALOGUE AND INSTITUTION RESPECT ON ROAD TO EU
Respect for institutions, the resumption of political dialogue and the rebuilding of a relationship of trust between Parliament and citizens will take Albania down the right road towards European integration, with the European Commission insisting on the need to see decisive steps forward on 12 key points. The appeal was made during a meeting in Tirana attended by Miroslav Lajcak, the envoy of the EU’s High Representative Lady Catherine Ashton, the head of state Bamir Topi, the Prime Minister Sali Berisha and the leader of the socialist opposition, Edi Rama. The forthcoming local elections due to be held on May 8 are surrounded by a climate of tension and strong suspicion by the opposition over the electoral process, which Lajcak says must instead be transparent and in line with international standards. The political crisis has indeed slowed down Tirana’s journey towards European integration, to the extent that Stefan Fule has also made a recent trip to Albania. The EU Commissioner for Enlargement held talks over the action plan to tackle the main issues regarding Albania’s integration, which Brussels highlighted in their latest report on enlargement. The EU wants to facilitate the solution to the crisis, but it must be found by local political leaders.
