07/02/2011 – SERBIA CONTINUES ON ROAD TO EU MEMBERSHIP

The approval of the stabilisation and association agreement between the EU and Serbia means that the country has come closer to joining the European Union. After the approval of the Parliament, now all member States have to ratify the agreement, which lowers trade barriers, before it can take effect. With the ratification of the agreement, Serbia is "encouraged to take further steps in its historic journey towards the EU, recognising the results that were obtained by the country in the past year. "Belgrade", as was said in Parliament, "will have to fully collaborate with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and guarantee that the agreement’s ratification process will continue without problems". The European Parliament has asked the remaining 15 countries to proceed with the ratification: so far 12 member States, including Italy, have ratified it. Serbia’s journey to EU membership will also allow the country to join the World Trade Organization, sch eduled at the end of 2011. (YB1 – Paolo Magrone)
