09/04/2010 – BALKANS: EIB;1.7 BLN LOANS IN 2009, BELGRADE OFFICE IN 2010
BRUSSELS – Loans by the European Investment Bank (EIB) to the western Balkans reached around 1.7 billion in 2009. That is why it has been decided to open a regional office this year in Belgrade.
According to data from the financial statement, the main beneficiary of the EIB funds last year was Serbia, with 819 million. In particular, a large part of the resources went towards the completion of the trans-European network, with 384 million for the construction of a new section of 75 km of the Corridor motorway between Grabovnica and Levosoje, while SMEs received 360 million euros. Croatia received a further 419 euros to develop its transport, energy and communication infrastructures, the application of EU environmental standards, support for SMEs and investments in local organisation. Loans worth a total of 153 million euros went to Bosnia Herzegovina, 111 million euros went to Montenegro, 100 million to Macedonia, 13 million to Albania, mainly for infrastructures and SMEs.
